Legal provisions
Each bottle of wine represents months of work. And this hard work deserves a beautiful label. In addition to design, however, it’s also important to bear in mind that in France, wine containers with a capacity of less than 60 liters are required to be labeled as the basis for mandatory consumer information. Certain information, such as the sales denomination, information on the bottler, residual sugar content and alcohol content, must be clearly legible on the wine bottle label. The details are governed by French wine law, based on European regulations.
Mandatory information
- Sales name
- Actual alcoholic strength by volume (TAVA)
- Provenance
- Nominal volume
- Name of bottler
- Batch number
- Allergens
- De-alcoholized” or “partially de-alcoholized” label and date of minimum durability (DDM)
- Sugar content
- Health message
Here you’ll find all the information you need to know about the correct marking and labeling of wine bottles.
Presentation label, main label, back label…
Many quality wines often bear three labels: a front label, a back label and a neck loop. However, it’s not compulsory to have all three labels on your bottle of wine. You can also include all the information on a single label. There is also the notion of a main label. The main label must contain the information required by wine law and be easy to read. If this information appears on the back label, the latter legally constitutes the main label.

What type of label should I choose?
We print your design to your specifications, either as self-adhesive labels on rolls or as self-adhesive labels on sheets. Self-adhesive labels have the advantage of being immediately usable thanks to their adhesive layer on the reverse, and can be applied to the wine bottle without any additional work. Our self-adhesive labels on rolls are ideal for both mechanical and manual processing. If you wish, you can also order repositionable adhesive labels.
You can choose between different types of paper for your self-adhesive labels on rolls–from standard paper to special papers with metallic, grass or recycled paper effects. Our standard range also includes vinyl films in polyethylene (PE film) or polypropylene (PP film), with white or transparent backing, as well as papers specially designed for wine labeling.

At labelletiquette.fr, you can make your labels both unique and elegant.
Mechanical application
If you want to apply your self-adhesive labels on rolls using a labeling machine, it’s important to know which winding direction you should use for your machines.
To ensure that nothing stands in the way of successful labeling of your wine bottles, it’s important to choose the right winding direction. In principle, there are two primary winding directions:
- Internal winding
- External winding
The printed side is therefore either inside or outside.
It is also important to distinguish between the possible positions of the wine labels on the roll:
- top leading
- bottom leading
- left side leading
- right side leading

These days, customers want to be contacted as individually and personally as possible. Our personalized labels give you the opportunity to customize your labels as you wish. Whether it’s an individual name, a QR code or a barcode–with labelletiquette.fr, there are no limits to your creativity.

Graphic design
Still and sparkling wines require high-quality packaging to give the buyer a positive first impression of the contents. In addition to the corresponding bottle design, this primarily involves a personalized label to stand out from other competitors’ wine bottles and present the consumer with its own brand image. Whether white, red, rosé or sparkling wine, whether organic or conventional, labels are indispensable, especially for winegrowers, wine stores, wineries and wine producers, not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for legal ones. Use professional, attractive labels to boost your sales and make your bottles more recognizable!
Still haven’t decided what your wine label should look like? That’s no problem either! Thanks to our graphic design service, you can have your labels designed entirely according to your wishes and requirements by our graphic designers.
