What is grass-based paper?

This eco-responsible material is made from renewable grass and raw materials, thus reducing wood consumption–a particularly interesting alternative for undertaking an eco-responsible approach to the design of your products. Grass-based paper also offers other advantages over “conventional” paper: the various materials used for this paper come from short circuits, which considerably reduces (by up to 50%) C02 emissions. The amount of water used to make this material is also divided by 2! What’s more, the preparation of grass-based paper is perfectly natural and involves no chemical treatment.

How is grass-based paper made?

The basic principle of grass-based paper is to harvest grass, which is then dried as hay. It is then crushed and pressed into pellets. The pellets are then dissolved in water at the mill. The material can then be further processed, depending on its use and field of application, into packaging, boxes, wrapping paper and even labels.

Grass-based paper is a natural raw material that is available almost everywhere and grows back several times a year. This makes it the ideal base material for labels.

Please note: As grass paper is a natural product, the color and structure of batches may vary slightly. Due to the structure of the material, fine writing and elements may come loose. When printing on a large surface, overflow may occur.

Design and finishing

Grass-based paper is not the only special feature. The look and feel also give this material a unique touch. With its unique structure, some grass fibers are still visible, making the material slightly yellowish. This natural base color of the material can be counteracted by printing in opaque white (HPI-White). If a layer of opaque white is printed first, followed by a color, the unique structure of the material is retained, but the colors are expressed more intensely and vibrantly.

You can also choose a hot foil or protective varnish finish for this grass-based paper material. But behind the development of this grass-based paper lies the idea of developing an environmentally and resource-friendly material, which should make it possible to act in an ecologically responsible way in the packaging and labeling sector. Further finishing would run counter to this basic idea.

When it comes to shape and size, however, there’s no limit to your creativity. Whether round, square or personalized, any shape is possible with grass-based paper.
