Label shapes – Product-specific use
The choice of label depends primarily on the product to be labelled. The following factors play a role here:
- Sector of activity
- Area of use
- Quality features
- Label information
- Aspect
For example, a sealing label is often used for food products such as honey or jams, while a neck label is used for champagne bottles. A product can, of course, bear several of the following labels.
Overview of label types :
1. Front label
The front label, also known as the recto or face label, is affixed to the front of a product. It usually contains only design elements such as the logo, product designation or slogan. The front label is often the customer’s first point of contact with the product at the point of sale, and therefore decides whether or not to buy a product. The aim of the front label is therefore to attract attention with an attractive design and convince the customer of the quality of the content, so that the product lands in the cart.
2. Back label
The back label, or verso label, is the label on the back of the product, usually containing additional information on contents, ingredients, manufacturer or barcode. The back label therefore serves primarily practical and informative purposes. Customers can reassure themselves by taking a look at the back of the product: does the first impression I got from the front label match the contents? Does the overall image convince me? Do I want to buy this product?
Our tip: Produce the front and back labels in a single production step, as an alternating label.
3. Lid seal label
Lid seal labels are designed to seal a lid to its packaging while clearly showing if the product has been opened. They provide an ideal tamper-evident solution for jars and boxes and can be fully customized in terms of shape, materials, and finishes.

4. Seal label
The seal label, also known as a guarantee seal, freshness seal or guarantee closure label, is a combination of a front label and a lid label connected by a freshness seal or tab. Seal labels are mainly used in the food sector and for products where freshness and absolute integrity are top priorities. The seal label is therefore synonymous with freshness and quality, and offers ample space for both visual design elements and important product information.
5. Neck label
Neck labels are mainly found in the beverage sector, especially for wine, spirits and champagne. The collar is a complementary element to the front label, serving above all to enhance the visual aspect and complete the overall image of the product.
6. Banner label
Banner labels, or wrap-around labels, go all the way around the product, so they usually enclose it completely, or at least for the most part. This type of label is particularly popular for cans and bottles. Banners offer plenty of space for design and information, acting as a banner for your product.
