Labels for oil: Which base to use?

Linseed oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, olive oil, peanut oil or rapeseed oil – the list of different types of oil is almost endless. Whether in the kitchen or the bathroom, oil works miracles, and its label has to stand up to many stresses.

Intervene, inform, protect content

Oil packaging must fulfill three functions: Attract customers’ attention, present important product information and, of course, protect its contents. This last point is particularly important for oils, as they are highly sensitive to light and heat due to specific production processes. This is why they – especially native, i.e. cold-pressed, oils – are often bottled in dark bottles for extra protection and to preserve their high quality.

This quality and elaborate production must in turn be emphasized and communicated to the outside world by appropriate packaging. The label plays a decisive role here. Choosing the right materials is particularly important at this stage.

Label requirements

Oil labels have to meet special requirements. They must, for example, adhere reliably to the bottle even when in direct contact with the oil, and must be stain-resistant and legible under all stresses. Unfortunately, our standard papers are not suited to these requirements. The fibers would absorb the liquid and the label would risk peeling off. As an alternative to our standard papers, we offer a paper specially developed for contact with oily and greasy products, our “Rustique Blanc Greaseproof” oil-repellent paper. Please contact us so that we can add this paper to your customer account so that it appears in your calculator.

Which medium is right for you?

We also recommend vinyl labels for your oil bottles. Vinyl labels (PP film or PE film) are moisture-resistant, guaranteeing reliable adhesion and long legibility. Would you like to be able to easily remove the label from the bottle so you can reuse it? If so, we can recommend our PP film with repositionable adhesive, which can be easily removed from the bottle without leaving any adhesive residue. If you’re looking for something very special, something out of the ordinary, a label made from Tyvek® might be just what you’re looking for. This non-woven material made from HDPE fibers is liquid-resistant, tear-proof and durable, making it ideal for oily products.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We’ll be happy to advise you and recommend the ideal materials for your oil labels. An additional tip: we generally recommend a protective varnish or, optionally, a laminate to protect the print on your label.
