The ideal option for your packaging: labels on rolls vs. labels on sheets

Labels on rolls or sheets? Whether or not the respective production methods are suitable for your requirements depends on the field of application. On one hand, it depends on the type of further processing: labels on rolls are generally processed mechanically. Furthermore, when printing on a roll, the winding direction, core and roll diameter, and number of labels per roll can be freely defined to suit your requirements. On the other hand, labels on sheets are not processed further by a machine. This production option comes into play when labels are applied by hand.

You need to take into account the size of the print run: labels on rolls are ideal for producing large quantities of labels. For smaller print runs, we generally recommend label production on sheets. However, each order must be evaluated individually to decide which type of production makes the most sense.

Finally, there are restrictions on the choice of material: if you opt to print your labels on sheets, not all substrates are available without restriction. For labels on rolls, you can choose from our 15 standard substrates. Nevertheless, both types of production allow you to make individual decisions regarding shape, size and design. History lesson: the concept of the packaging label

The history of the label is made up of different cultural contexts and stages of development. The origin (etymology) of the term “label” can be traced back to the French language, and translates as “to fix or attach”. However, the concept of label as we know it today originated in ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptian idea of the rolling seal (an engraved cylindrical object) was developed by Roman culture. Thanks to the Romans, the seal became a pendant that was attached to various containers to identify their contents. This laid the foundations for today’s packaging label industry.
