Current information: end of the transition period for the energy label

From 01.03.2023, manufacturers and marketers will have to affix the new European energy label to their products. The transition period officially ends on 28.02.2023. At present, the old and new labels can still coexist on the market. But from 01.03.2023, the new energy label will be mandatory.

The new energy labels provide greater transparency and make the energy scale more meaningful for consumers. The new European energy labels also feature a QR code. Scanning the code takes you directly to the European EPREL database. The database contains information on a range of products, which should help consumers to make well-informed purchases.

A to G: new structures for energy labels

First of all, things will once again be simpler for consumers. Back in 2015, the European Commission decided to return to the original simple A to G scale. Since March 2021, the new energy efficiency label has been mandatory. The new energy labels immediately signal to consumers the energy consumption of the electrical appliance through colors. Thus, the dark green of energy class A designates particularly economical appliances, and the dark red of energy class G designates inefficient appliances. A+, A++ and A+++ are therefore a thing of the past. The original system dates back to 1990.

What’s more, a product database will make it easier in future to identify energy-efficient models and avoid getting lost in the jungle of labels. The extended labelling model, with labels such as A++ and A+++, returns to the original model with a simple A to G scale. From now on, no further “plus” classes will be created, but regular readjustment of the classes will ensure that A always denotes the most energy-efficient model. Unlike in the past, technical progress no longer creates new energy classes, and the A to G scale is maintained. The timetable decided by the European Commission for the new label is as follows:

From 2020: Televisions, washing machines and dishwashers, lamps and refrigerators.

From 2025: Vacuum cleaners, fans and tumble dryers.

From 2030: Boilers and heaters.
