European regulation 2021/2117 in brief

From 08.12.2023, information on energy values, possible allergens, nutritional values and ingredients must be displayed. There are two ways of doing this:

e-label: The future of wine labels

From December 8, 2023, a new European regulation will come into force, revolutionizing the labeling of wine and wine-based beverages. At labelletiquette.fr, we’ve prepared for this and are a reliable partner at your side to ensure your wine labels meet the new requirements. European regulation 2021/2117, also known as the CAP reform, obliges wine producers, bottlers and distributors to include information on energy values, possible allergens, nutritional values and ingredients on wine labels. They can choose between the classic method and the innovative electronic method with the digital or electronic label, otherwise known as the e-label. In both cases, information on possible allergens and energy values must appear on the label in printed form.

The digital method (e-label) :

Here, mandatory information is made available via a QR code on the label. These digital labels offer many advantages, including more space for creative graphic design, and the possibility of reducing the size of the label.

The classic method:

Your information will be printed on the label, along with the list of ingredients and a table with nutritional values.

What are the disadvantages of the digital method?

  • Not everyone has a smartphone or tablet connected to the Internet.
  • Internet access is not always guaranteed everywhere.
  • In addition, the QR code must be correctly affixed and error-free, so that consumers can access the information.

What are the advantages of the digital method?

  • Transmitting information via QR code offers more space for graphic design.
  • Since QR codes don’t take up much space, it’s possible to reduce the size of the label. This reduces costs.
  • Whether it’s a zoom, translation or search function, the digital space offers many aids.

Stages of implementation :

1. Know the values or have them determined: To meet the new requirements, you need to know the relevant values for your wine labels, or have them determined.

2. QR code or not: Decide whether you want to opt for the electronic method with a QR code. If so, contact your website manager or use one of the well-known platform providers. If not, the information should be printed directly on the label. Information on energy values and any allergens must be printed on the label in both cases.

3. Label design: Due to the additional information, design changes are necessary. Simply choose our graphic correction service and we’ll take care of integrating the new information into your existing label design. If you’re planning a complete redesign of your labels, our graphic design service is at your disposal.

4. Consultation with the relevant authorities: You are responsible for the accuracy of the information on the labels. We recommend that you consult the relevant authorities and submit your project to them in advance by e-mail or letter.
