The label on your honeypot gets the buzz!

You don’t have to be Winnie The Pooh to be a fan of honey! Whether you spread it on your bread for breakfast or put it in your tea, honey is a unanimous favorite. But did you know that many jars of honey aren’t really honey at all? In fact, a third of honey is not compliant (according to a 2015 European Union study of 2,000 samples tested)! This is honey that is not “pure”, the result of mixing with syrup or rice sugar…

In 2019, French law will be revised to make it mandatory to indicate the country of origin of honey. All the more reason to update your honeypot label to make sure you’re fully compliant!

A close look at the honeypot label

The best way to buy really good honey is directly from a beekeeper, or from a beekeeper at a market, for example. In supermarkets, and particularly for cheaper products, the labels on jars of honey can tend to be less explicit and may, for example, contain glucose or fructose syrup, coloring or pollen grains.

French honeys such as “Miel des Pyrénées”, Tarn, Picardie, etc., as well as artisanal honeys that are not produced in excessive quantities, are often synonymous with quality. Beekeepers know: good honey is made by passionate craftsmen. By respecting regulatory standards, producers sell quality honey that does not mislead the consumer.

The indications on a honey label can sometimes be misleading: the origin of honey is something to keep a close eye on. For professionals in the sector, this means clearly stating the origin of their honey and the provenance of the hives, the name of the beekeepers’ family, and so on. So that the label is both informative and attractive to the customer!

The honeypot, pure nectar

For your honey jar label, it’s important to mention that the honey is pure and unprocessed. In fact, honey must be the one and only ingredient in the container! It is customary to note the floral or geographical origin of the honey, for example, whether it is acacia, lavender, lime, chestnut, forest or mountain honey… each with its own characteristics in terms of taste, texture and color. Last but not least, the label on the honeypot must be legible, indelible and in French.

Beekeepers, we advise you to be careful with terms such as “thousand flowers”, “golden honey”, “liquid honey” etc., which are only informative terms, tolerated if they are written in small type.

The indications to put on the labels of your honey jars are :

  • Batch number
  • Best-before date
  • Best before date
  • Net weight
  • Name and address of beekeeper
  • The origin of honey
