Roll labels are usually applied to the product with labeling machines. When producing roll labels, it is therefore very important to know the constraints of the labeling machine, and to design the label rolls accordingly. The following values should be taken into account:
Maximum outer diameter
The outer diameter of the roll is the final diameter obtained after wrapping the labels around the core. You can choose either the maximum outer diameter of the roll or the number of labels per roll.
This value is important to ensure that the roll can be inserted into your labeling machine without difficulty during mechanical processing. If no indication is given, the rollers are manufactured according to ecological and economic criteria.
Core size
The standard diameter of the core is 76 mm (inner diameter), but 40 mm or 25 mm options are also available. The choice of diameter is particularly important for mechanical processing, as it must be adapted to the requirements of your labeling machine. However, if your labels are applied manually, this information may be ignored.
Winding direction
If you want to process your self-adhesive labels on rolls with a labeling machine, it’s important to know which winding direction you need.
There are basically two winding directions for your self-adhesive labels on rolls:
- Internal winding
- External winding
The printed side can therefore face inwards or outwards.
The next step is to distinguish the positions of the labels on the roll. There are four variants:
- Bottom edge leading
- Top edge leading
- Left edge leading
- Right edge leading
Label height & width
It is important to indicate here the final label format, i.e. without the bleed removed during cutting. Width and height are defined according to the view on the label/layout, i.e. how the label will later be positioned on the product.
Example: If you need die-cut labels in 50 x 100 mm (W x H) format, please enter these dimensions in the calculator. In your print file, however, you specify a print file format of 55 x 105 mm, as the bleed must also be indicated here.
Gap
A gap is the space between two labels on the roll. This intermediate cut varies from one customer to another, depending on how the rolls are then processed and applied to the product.
As standard, we produce rolls with an intermediate gap of 5 mm between the labels. A smaller gap is possible on request, but we recommend a minimum intermediate cut of 3 mm: anything below would make mechanical processing and cutting more difficult.
Outer Margin
The outer margin refers to the distance from the edge of the roll. It only applies to the production of adhesive labels in rolls; this data can be neglected for sheet labels.
The standard, corresponding to the bleed of the print file, is 2.5 mm on each side, for a total of 5 mm. We recommend a minimum of 1.5 mm on each side, for a total of 3 mm. Wider tolerances are possible on request. A value below the recommended minimum may cause difficulties during weeding.
